I am sure at one point in your life you have been asked the question, if you could have dinner with any 3 people dead or alive who would it be and what would you ask. #Runchat asked the question a few weeks ago and just asked name one person. So today my question for you is, If you could pick 3 people to run for a day with who would it be and what would you ask them or do with them?
Here are my 3 from least wanting to, to most wanting to:
3: Grete Waitz (1 October 1953 – 19 April 2011) was a Norwegian marathon runner and former world record holder. Waitz won nine New York City Marathons between 1978 and 1988, more than any other runner in history. She also won a silver medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and a gold medal at the 1983 World Championships in Athletics in Helsinki.
I have to choose Grete because hands down she is considered to be if not the best, one of the best to ever put on a pair of running shoes. Every year they talk about the New York Marathon Grete's name is brought up in the conversation. I would just ask her how she did it? What was her training and what kept her motivated over the years.
2: Steve Roland "Pre" Prefontaine (January 25, 1951 – May 30, 1975) was an American middle and long-distance runner who competed in the 1972 Olympics. Prefontaine once held the American record in seven different distance track events from the 2,000 meters to the 10,000 meters.[2] Prefontaine died in May 1975 at the age of 24 in an auto accident.
As a American runner Prefontaine is the runner I think a lot of people want to be like. Even though he died at a young age he still to this day is considered one of the best ever and is known as the person who made running "cool" in his days. Some of his records stood for years after he was gone and in high school cross country his name is still brought up for how good he was. I think I would just ask him to teach me how to go as fast as he did. And I would obviously want to race him in the 1600 meters to see how bad I got my ass kicked.
1: My dad (William Byrne)- My father is still alive(I interviewed him early on in my blog in case you missed it) but when he was a runner I was still young. When I took running seriously he had already suffered an injury that prevented him from running. He ran races from 5k's to marathons and still enjoys watching me run. I would just like to go on a run and not ask question. I would just like to do one race where we were both healthy and in our prime and finally settle who is the best. Once again I would probably have my ass handed to me, but the moment would make it worth it all.
Fun post! I just learned that the author Haruki Murakami is a runner, so he'd definitely be in my top 3. I'd ask him about his books though. :-)
ReplyDeleteIt is always amazing to find out people you wouldn't think were runners actually are.
