Training Week 1: Jan 5th- Jan 11th

Week one of training was not the way I wanted to start my training. I was very busy with my normal job and then going to DICK'S Sporting Goods stores 4 nights during the week. Needless to say I didn't get in much training. The plan was to wake up early and go to the gym before work, however I ended up going into work everyday early so that flew out the window. The good news is this week will be the only week that I am that busy, from here on out most marathon related things are on the weekends.

So here is a quick rundown of how my week went.

Monday - Thursday:  I was at a different DSG location. I got to see many familiar faces and got to meet some really interesting people. I was amazed by the one lady who told me she is about to run her 300th marathon in a few weeks. I can only hope I am that lucky.  I did manage to get some burpees in these day, so it's not like the days were a complete waste.

Friday- When I woke up I pinched a nerve in my neck and decided to take this day off from all training. I wasn't happy because I really wanted to get out and run.

Saturday- I was still sore in my neck, but I couldn't wait any longer to run. I headed out in the bitter cold for a 5 mile run. I learned a very valuable lesson that day, just because your ears are covered does not mean your head will be warm. I shave my head, therefore I have no hair to help insulate my head. I was in actual pain on my run. I headed out at night and bought a good hat to wear on runs now. Lesson learned.

Sunday (Today)- I will be heading to the gym and doing 4-6 miles on the treadmill.  They are calling for freezing rain and I do not want to get caught in that, so I will grin and bear the treadmill.

How did your first week go if you are training for the DICK'S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon?

  1. Sorry that your first week wasn't according to plan, but it's better that it happen now when mileage is lower than during your peak week!
I'm sad I wasn't able to make any of the events at Dick's...maybe next time! I cannot imagine running 300 marathons!!! What an inspiration!

    1. I am also glad it happened the first week rather than late in the training. I will be at a bunch of different events so I am sure we will run into each other at some point.

  2. I start training this week, and the weather promises to be good, so I hope we can both get out there and get some good training miles in!
